Neo-Babylonian forces, led by King Nebuchadnezzar, arrived in Jerusalem the capital of the Kingdom of Judah, earlier in the day.
In high-tension talks with Judah’s King Jehoiakim, the Babylonian leader, intent on dominating Mesopotamia, insisted that Judah relinquish its alliance with Egypt. He ordered that a number of elite Jewish youth be taken hostage to Babylon as a guarantee of Judah’s subservience.
